The team over at the Los Angeles Times commissioned me to create a full page type based cover, animationand a selection of editorial drop caps to mark the launch their new guide, GO HIKING IN L.A.
Working closely with one of their Art Directors (Ross May) we used my take on character filled kinetic typography to whip up a bright, stretched and striking cover design. This was then accompanied by an animation for their web articles, an extra animated sub title and a selection of drop caps for the inside spreads.
When it came to the web animation, although short and condensed, I really wanted the animated version of my cover design to simulate and encapsulate the feeling of hiking. By using a staggered stretch, each of the letters growing to different heights was created to give the sense of increasing pitch, much like a hike up a hill or mountain.
